The Department of Computer Science came into existence in 1984 with an M.Tech. course in Computer and Information Science, which was the first in Kerala. The department currently offers full-time and part-time M.Tech programs in various specializations, a five-year integrated M.Sc. course, and Ph.D. programs in the areas of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Cyber-Physical Systems, Bioinformatics, and Software Engineering. The Department collaborates through MoUs with academic and industrial partners including the University of Glasgow, TCS, UST Global, ITC, and Infenox Technologies. Additionally, the department is also involved in collaborative research with foreign universities like the Research Council of Norway, NTU Singapore, Queen's University UK, and Indian institutes including IISc. , various IITs, IIITs, and NITs. The department has 8.75 Cr worth of ongoing consultancy and funded projects including the INTPART Project (NTNU Norway), SPARC Project, and RUSA Project(Govt. of India). Department faculty has received teaching and research awards including AICTE Visvesvaraya Best Teacher Award (2021), Kairali Research Award (2020), Distinguished Young Faculty Award (2020), and DRDO Academy Excellence Award (2020). In 2024, CUSAT was ranked in 801+  Computer Science subject-wise category by THE World University Rankings. The department also is entrusted with the responsibility of managing the upcoming High Performance Computing facility worth 26 Cr. The department also provides technical expertise and support to various Government/Quasi-government bodies
